Tenants Union Programs

The Tenants Union has four integrated programs:

Justice in South Seattle Project

In Southeast Seattle, where more than two-thirds of the residents are people of color, tenants are facing the city’s most severe housing issues. The Justice in South Seattle Project is a leadership development, education and organizing effort focused on remedying injustices in housing that are rooted in racism, xenophobia and classism.

Section 8 Tenants Organizing Project

The Section 8 Tenants’ Organizing Project is a nationally recognized organizing project formed in 1997 to mobilize tenants of privately owned HUD subsidized housing.

Tenant Ownership Project

In 200?, a multi-lingual and multi-cultural group of dedicated tenants at the Benson East Apartments in Kent organized with the Tenants Union to take control of their housing by purchasing their apartment complex from their landlord. This landmark victory was the first tenant ownership project in the Northwest.

Tenant Education Program

The Tenants’ Union Education Program helps tenants to get the knowledge and skills to keep themselves and their families safely housed. Tenants in Washington have no government agency to rely on to enforce the laws; instead “self-help” remedies are written into the law for tenants to enforce ourselves. The TU provides empowerment-based education and assistance to help tenants learn their rights and take action to resolve housing problems.
