Take Action for the National Housing Trust Fund

In 2008 the National Housing Trust Fund (NHFT) was signed into law. The NHFT is very similar to Washington State’s housing trust fund and would be used to create affordable housing. This is the first new federal program to serve extremely low income families enacted since 1974.

Funding for the NHTF was to come from contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac; however, due to their financial distress their regulator has suspended all contributions.

The National Housing Trust Fund needs a new, permanent source of revenue.
President Obama’s proposed budget allocates $1 billion to the trust fund. However, Congress will need to pass additional legislation to make this funding a reality. Please urge your representatives to fund the NHFT!
